Paparazzi Power

Last week, like most weeks, members of the paparazzi completely ignored a celebrity’s right to privacy and normal undisturbed family time. They took and sold photos to the highest bidder to help qwell our star-crazed-society’s disgusting need for candid photos of entertainers doing everyday things. In this case the victim was Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross and her twin daughters. Her daughters happened to be wearing our “Celia” style UV Skinz swim shirts which was quite a pleasant surprise. Hopefully Marcia Cross doesn’t mind her lack of privacy and loves UV Skinz! Cross’ assistant said we could find these photos here:

Farmer’s Tan

In this day and age there are a lot of strange things that occur in our day to day life, natural phenomenon that baffle even the most hardened scientist and skeptic. One of the things that has never baffled a single soul is the “farmer’s tan,” when someone wears a short sleeve shirt all day under the sun causing their arms and neck to tan, but not the rest of their body. Many people receive the title of “red neck” because of their physical appearance after said activities. Is it strange that these people don’t get burned all over their body? NO! But they aren’t wearing the newest UV protective clothing from the posh, new, hauty tuaty companies. How do these outdoor workers avoid get burned under their shirts without mixing the protective chemicals in with their laundry?

Who gets sunburned through their shirt? Jeans? According to the scare tactics of these companies YOU WILL! Almost nobody needs to wear UV protective clothing everyday, all day long (unless of course your daily attire consists of nothing more than draping mosquito netting over yourself). These companies try to take your fear of skin cancer and nurture it into an all consuming lifestyle at the mercy of their latest collection. Sure it is good to wear a wide brimmed hat and long sleeves when you are working in the garden, but I doubt that throwing your money at these companies is going to make you any safer.

A recent article in a popular magazine claims to be verifying common myths about sun protection. This article goes something like this: “#4) Clothing shields you from UV rays. False. The facts: a regular white cotton shirt only provides an SPF of 5 to 7 (wet, it drops to 3)” then they urge you to purchase the latest clothing from Cabana Life whose newest collection is filled with Cotton garments that claim to be 50 UPF (thats not something the bother mentioning in the article). How is Cabana Life’s cotton any more UV resistant than my cotton?

UV Skinz are for the times when one traditionally isn’t covering up. When you are swimming you are usually half naked and exposed to the elements. Your arms aren’t covered, your stomach isn’t covered, your back isn’t covered. If you do wear a normal t-shirt in the water it will stretch and become less protective, less comfortable and it might not ever fit again. Don’t get me wrong, staying protected from over exposure of the sun is very important, but almost nobody needs to run out and make sure that ALL or their clothes are as UV resistant as these companies would like you to think they need to be.

The New York Times

We have a review in the New York Times! Of course UV Skinz is being compared to rash guards, which we are not and in no way are trying to compete with, but it was a positive review anyways. Check it out for yourself: nytimes.com

Roger Reid dies at 55

(My boss thought this was of interest because Reid worked on Desperate Housewives with Marcia Cross who is a skin care advocate and fan of UV Skinz.)

Eye Balls

This morning I drove my partner’s father’s truck to work today and noticed that I went out of my way to have my sunglasses with me. I usually keep them in my car, but after a series of subconscious events I had kept them close so that I would have them this morning until I retrieved my own vehicle. I didn’t start wearing sunglasses regularly until I started college (it was easier to people watch if people don’t know I was watching them). I now find myself wear sunglasses all the time and feel very uncomfortable without them. This is probably all for the better because your eyes are very sensitive organs that are very important to daily activities, and working in the design field I would be useless without sight.

Before my people watching college days I always tried to wear proper eye protection when the situation called for it. I wear eye wear while skiing more than any other activity. The reflection off of the snow is so harsh that is can cause serious damage in a matter of hours. Every thousand feet (approximately 305 meters) increase in elevation, the intensity of UV rays increases by five percent. Being up at 10,000-14,000 feet I imagine that the UV rays are pretty intense. Snow blindness is basically a sunburn of the cornea and conjunctiva, and may not be noticed for several hours from exposure. Symptoms range from bloodshot and teary eyes to swelling shut. In very severe cases, snow blindness can cause permanent vision loss. Reflective eye damage doesn’t only happen from the snow, it happens with water, glass, grass and any surface that reflects so make sure that you have a good pair of sunglasses for when the situation calls for it, weather people watching or otherwise.
