Scan Your Skin For Skin Cancer Using Your Iphone

The new iphone app, Handyscope, can turn your iphone into a cancer screening device! This is awesome news for those of us obsessed with skin cancer checks by allowing you to capture and save magnified photos of suspicious moles. The Handyscope attachment was created by FotoFinder and actually turns your iphone into a professional dermatoscope. By just attaching the Handyscope to your iphone it gives the camera a magnifying power of 20x. It also comes with an app that could be used to check whether or not the person is suffering from skin cancer.

FotoFinder will launch the handyscope in February at the 69th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in New Orleans. UV Skinz staff will be there this year and if we get a chance to check-out the Handyscope we will let you know all about it!

Health professionals can order the handyscope for 1,166.20 euro (approx. US$1,590), while the app costs US$11.99 through the iTunes App Store.

Skin Cancer Online App is Creating New Possibilties

Marty Tenenbaum, a skin cancer survivor, has created a free online app along with Cancer Commons that is revolutionary in its ability to connect people across all borders and give them a chance to make large-scale connections in the battle against skin cancer. Tenenbaum survived skin cancer, but never got over the frustration he felt as he tried to search through the many treatments options, clinical trials and research for a way to survive. He gives all his credit to the National Cancer Institute because of the personal connections he made. Those connections made him realize that the key to advancing cancer research and treatment is by making those types of connections on as large a scale as possible. He launched his web application to bring together patients, physicians, and scientists regardless of separation class, education or gender lines. Dealership Donates Car to Mom with Stage 4 Melanoma

Share
I heard of this story about a Mother of three, Shannon Clark,  from Fort Collins, CO who had been diagnosed with stage 4 Melanoma in 2008. She has been able to beat the odds and continues to live her life fully for herself and her family. Before Christmas the Dodge dealership of Fort Collins donated a used-car to the family of Shannon Clark in hopes that it would alleviate some of the stress of frequent trips to University Hospital in Denver. Like anyone would be the Clark family is very grateful for the generousity shown by the dealership.

Here are a few words from Shannon Clark:

“I feel adamant that no one really knows what’s going to happen. I give and fight as hard as I can. I have three incredible kids who are worth fighting for every day,” Clark said.

“I’m incredibly lucky and blessed that the treatment options that have come our way have been very successful despite the odds. We will just continue with the hope and faith that it will continue down that road. I’m a Stage 4 cancer patient, so it’s hard to say, ‘yes,’ I have a great prognosis. But it doesn’t say you give up hope and thoughts that thing can’t go better. We live for each day, live it to the fullest; and whatever I’m given I’m thankful for each day and each month given to us. I feel like I’ve beaten the odds so much to this point that I think I will continue to do that.”
