FDA Approves Yervoy

For the first time in thirteen years the Federal Drug Administration approved a new drug, Yervoy, that has been shown to extend the survival rate in patients with late-stage melanoma!  Yervoy, also known as ipilimumab was developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb. The “yes” was given on March 25, 2011 after the results of  an international study of 676 end-stage melanoma patients was received. The study showed that Yervoy increased the survival rate of melanoma patients from six months to ten months. Also, those given the drug were more likey to be alive after two years. The way Yervoy works is that is blocks a molecule that hinders the body’s ability to fight the cancer cells. Once the molecule is blocked the body’s immune system can mobilize to destroy the cancer. Even though this drug seems like a saving grace there are some brutal side-effects to take into account. Thirteen percent of the patients that received Yervoy experienced severe to fatal auto-immune reactions, fatigue, diarrhea, skin rash and intestinal inflammation.

Director of the Melanoma Research Foundation, Tim Turnham, gave his thoughts on the new breakthrough by saying,

“This is a critical breakthrough for advanced-stage melanoma patients who have far too few approved treatment options available,” said Timothy J. Turnham, the executive director of the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF).  “Patients have been waiting for a life-changing innovation like this one and news of the approval has galvanized the patient community.”

This drug will be used for those patients whose skin cancer has spread to other parts of the body and where all other treatment has failed. Hopefully, the increased survival rate will give those with late-stage melanoma more time with their families and their own life. End-stage melanoma is a tough bullet to bite. The people who have to endure this type of Melanoma are the strongest people in the world. The symptoms of late-stage melanoma are not a walk-in-the-park. Melanoma patients can endure weight loss; either due to loss of appetite from treatment or for no apparent reason. The second is Melanosis which is a graying of the patients skin caused by the presence of single cell cancers that have metastasized in the skin. The last is Metastasis where the cancer begins to spread to other parts of the body like the lymph nodes, skin, liver, brain and lungs.

Melanoma isn’t something anyone wants to face alone, or has to. You can find links to websites and blogs that discuss melanoma right here on the UV Skinz blog. I also just discovered these website you can also visit The Cancer Forums, Cure Today.com and Melanoma Missionary blog  for support, answers to questions or just to know that you aren’t the only one.

I will be posting this on Facebook–please feel free to join the discussion!

Tis the Season For Spring Break

It’s that time of year again, Spring Break!!  With the beginning of Spring on March 20th, our Facebook fans shared  how they celebrate the first day of Spring. One fan said that their family has a “1st day of Spring” egg hunt! How fun!! Another said they put out the patio furniture and set up the trampoline. Both are great ways to be with family and enjoy the outdoors!

As we are coming out of winter it is time to starting thinking about our families sun safety routine. Here is an example of an awesome sun safety routine that a Facebook fan shared;

“We make sure our kids wear sun shirts and hats and a 30 spf sun block. I wear my UV Skinz shirt (great product!) and use a 65 spf sun block (I don’t like to get sunburned!) My wife uses a 40-50 spf sun block and hangs out under the umbrella.”

Leave a comment and share your sun safety routine!

Spring is the time when we all get the itch to be outdoors, shed our winter coats and feel the sun on our faces. Along with the longer daylight and trips to tropical places we all need to remember to be sun-safe! The American Academy of Pediatrics  has released a detailed list of Spring Break sun safety tips for the whole family, from birth to adults. The website page also gives you the option to email the tips to your friends and family. I just wanted to share a few of the tips and you can follow the link to see the rest.

Babies:

Dress babies in light-weight clothing, like UV Skinz and keep babies under six months out of the direct sun.

Kids:

Choose a sunscreen made for children and choose clothing with a tight-weave and breathable. UV Skinz combo sets are perfect for children!

If your child gets a sunburn contact your pediatrician immediately!

Adults and the use of tanning salons:

The intensity of UVR radiation produced by some tanning salons can be 10 to 15 times higher than the midday sun.

The AAP supports legislation prohibiting minors under 18 years old to use tanning salons.

These are just tips to keep you and your family safe! Enjoy your Spring Break and “like” UV Skinz on Facebook to connect with UV Skinz and all our awesome fans!!

Nail Cancer Awareness Campaign

Two Kalamazoo residents, Art Hoesktra and Maria Drawhorn, work to raise awareness and the survival rate of a rare Melanoma. What started off as a discolored nail turned out to be Acral Letignous Melanoma. So rare that only 80 people are diagnosed a year and it is more common for minorities to be diagnosed with this type of melanoma. Hoesktra and Drawhorn share a goal to raise awareness among patients, health care providers and nail technicians. Nail technicians are in the perfect position to observe any changes or discolorations that could lead to an early diagnosis. Just like with all Melanoma, early detection is key! So  the two have launched a Nail Cancer Awareness Campaign in hopes to have their message reach every doctor and manicurist by May 2012. Just in time for National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Read more of the article at Mlive.com.

I thought that it was kind of awesome that Hoesktra was wearing a Bob Marley shirt in the photo. Paying respects to a great musician who didn’t survive his diagnosis of acral letignous melanoma.

Melanoma Roadtrip USA

Last month, two Melanoma survivors from Australia, Clint and Jay, road-tripped around the US spreading the word about the dangers of tanning salon use. Along the way they interviewed people who have been touched by melanoma, talked with educators and the public while video blogging every step of the way. You can see the video blogs on their website Melanoma Road Trip USA. They want to educate the young adults in the US that melanoma is a deadly disease that sometimes can’t just be cut out. It’s a harsh reality, but that is one of the reasons why it is so important to take the extra precautions and not allow minors to use tanning beds. Most of the people interviewed admitted that they used tanning salons or waited too long to get checked out. There are some real candid interviews that I really enjoyed watching. It’s eye-opening to  learn a little more about melanoma and it’s side-effects, especially on the lives of the people affected. Also amazing to see someone take a tragedy and turn it into a way to help other people live more happy and fulfilling lives. Reminds me of someone we all know around here at UV Skinz (Rhonda)

Take a look and read more about Jay and Clint–then let us know what you think on our Facebook page!
