Five Day Countdown BEGINS!

In FIVE days and counting UV Skinz will be ending our Spring 20% off ALL kids long-sleeved swim shirts to begin a bigger mission. May 1st marks the beginning of a month-long mission to raise awareness about skin cancer and prevention. It’s Skin Cancer Awareness Month! Babies under age six months should not be in the sun at all. Most pediatricians recommend no direct sunlight exposure for infants within the first few years. However, most infants older than six months regularly spend some time outdoors, even if just for walks in a stroller, and should be sun protected from head to toe. Protecting babies’ skin, regardless of the season, is essential to good skin health and safe sun exposure into adulthood.

The National Cancer Institute reports that many common cancer rates are falling, but melanoma rates within the U.S. continue to grow at an alarming rate. Rhonda Sparks implores parents to cover their children to prevent them from becoming the one in five Americans who will develop skin cancer. “I am doing all that I can to protect my children from suffering the same fatetheir Father suffered when we lost him to melanoma. I hope our Baby Skinz donation program will prevent more families from being impacted by this devastating disease.”

An important part of skin cancer prevention is creating awareness. Creating awareness is all about saving our children’s lives in the future. Over 90% of skin cancers are preventable with the righteducation and awareness.

Awesome Melanoma News!

This old saying holds true in the world of melanoma breakthroughs, “You learn something new everyday.”  There is so much going on that the only way to keep up with it all is to trust good ‘ole google alerts. You can also keep up with UV Skinz through google alerts too. Just use the keyword, UV Skinz, and you’re all set! I wanted to share with you some links to some very awesome melanoma news. If you have any melanoma or skin cancer news that you would like to share just leave a comment with the link or share it on the UV Skinz Facebook wall. We would love to know!

A big part of melanoma research relies on donations. There have been some pretty interesting fundraisers going on within the last month. One group of women completely shaved their heads to raise more than $3000 for the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand.

Peter’s Fun Racer hosted the SPF Days Go Sun Smart in Henniker, NH. Skiers and riders purchased lift tickets for $25 with $10 of every one purchased going to Peter’s Fund Racer to support melanoma research. Guests also received a sample of sunscreen! They raised $1,000 dollars over the two days of skiing.

In Scientific news:

“Cancer Commons, an initiative of CollabRx, a provider of information technology to personalize cancer treatments and accelerate research, announces the publication of a molecular disease model of melanoma (MDMM) which classifies the disease into molecular subtypes, rather than traditional histological or cellular subtypes, and describes treatment guidelines for each subtype, including specific assays, drugs, and clinical trials. The paper, titled “Molecular Disease Model for Melanoma,” by Vidwans et al, was published in the March 30th issue of PLoS ONE.”

Duke University researchers have discovered that the use of lasers can be used to detect between cancerous and non-cancerous tissues by looking at the chemicals they contain. This eliminates the need for unnecessary biopsies where actual tissue is removed and studied under a microscope.

Now for the biggest news in melanoma. Drumroll please!….Great Britian passed a law banning minors under 18 from using tanning salons. The fine for breaking the law converted to US dollars is over $30,000!! Way to go! Hopefully, the rest of the world will catch on.

That’s all the news I have for now. Remember you can share anything you come across on our Facebook wall!
