Teaching how important good sun safe habits are should begin at an early age. Just one childhood sunburn can more than double a person’s chance of developing melanoma in adulthood. Children can also develop Pediatric Melanoma which resembles adulthood Melanoma.
Melanoma and skin cancer are caused by the UVA rays damaging the DNA in skin cells that cause mutations that lead to the disease. People are exposed to UVA rays through sun exposure, tanning, and artificial sources. There has been a world-wide rise in overall UV awareness. Ultraviolet radiation is recognized as a carcinogen by both the US Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization. The U.S. isn’t the only country that with concerns about our youths over-exposure to ultraviolet rays. North America is ranked at the bottom of the list of World Skin Cancer Hot Spots. While Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Australia and New Zealand are at the top. Australia and New Zealand have developed Melanoma awareness campaigns and curriculum directly targeting children. Kids are encouraged to Slip, Slop, Slap and even use their imaginations to create peer-to-peer learning videos!
With the proper education, role-models and high-quality uv protective clothing it’s the hope of UV Skinz that the children of our future won’t be touched by Melanoma at such young ages. Celebrities have realized how important childhood sun protection is. Matthew McConaughey’s son, Ricky Martin’s sons and Marcia Cross’ daughters and Tori Spelling’s children have all been seen sporting UV Skinz swim shirts.
We have been so lucky to have been approved by the Melanoma International Foundation , AIM at Melanoma, and we’ve received theiParenting and the PTPA awards over the years! A huge THANK YOU to our supporters, Facebook Fans, Twitter followers and most importantly…YOU!
