AIM at Melanoma

As many of you who follow UV Skinz and our story know, May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. For the fourth year we ran our annual Save a Baby’s Skin Campaign, unleashing our super cute My First Skinz on you, and had a blast doing it. In addition to our own awareness campaigns last month marked the second year that we had donated to AIM at Melanoma. They are a hard working group that sponsors awareness walks all over the nation during the month of May. These walks generate thousands of dollars each year for melanoma research. Their mission is near and dear to us and our own mission:

To increase support for melanoma research; to promote prevention and education among the general public and medical professionals; and to provide comprehensive and easily accessible melanoma resources for patients, survivors, and caregivers.

Each year we donate as much swag and literature as we can muster in hopes that we will raise prevention awareness for the participants and their families. We donated to over a dozen awareness walks and events this year and hope to help out many more in the future. If you know of any organizations or events that you think could use some awareness/prevention literature or products be sure to let us know. We want to get people covered all over the world and we can do it, with your help!

The Good Old Days?

I found these photos of  some babies sunbathing while researching photos from the 1950s. The infants were laid out in the sun by their nurse and I am sure flipped periodically to help them achieve that “healthy glow.” A practice like this used to be a standard child care as we saw back in these vintage ads I dug up a while back. Getting outside and being in the sun is a part of a healthy lifestyle, but this is a bit of overkill. Remember, back then there were doctor endorsed cigarettes! We know now that during the first years of life babies are particularly fragile and susceptible to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Please make sure to keep your children protected this summer, but have fun too.

Flutter Favorite

Celebrity Baby Scoop notified us that there has been another UV Skinz siting in Hollywood! It appears that Savannah Mahoney, one of Marcia Cross’ twin daughters, can’t get enough of her UV Skinz. The photo below shows the two leaving Savannah’s music class. That’s right! Savannah wasn’t even swimming and she wanted to wear her UV Skinz! But who could blame her? Our Pink Flutter design has to be one of the cutest swim shirts on the market. It is so cute and so in demand that 2010 will see a new Purple Flutter! Same classic design with a new color scheme for your purple loving little ones. Check out UVSkinz.com in the near future for more information.

COMING IN 2010!

We Did Something.

Below is a short article that was recently posted on Mama Bird Diaries about various celebrities and groups joining the Haiti relief cause:

Last month, I went on Scary Mommy’s website and saw this. You have to click to see it. I know. The reality of life with kids can be pretty gross, right? So, of course, since then I’ve been looking for a way to gross out my readers. (Some people have goals of inspiring their readers with beautiful, poetic prose but thankfully I do not.) And finally, it hit me. This is the nastiest, ickiest thing I’ve seen in the last week… Are those dreadlocks in his beard?

I just wanted to watch the Hope for Haiti telethon and take in the sweet sounds of the heavenly Justin Timberlake and then Pitt has to go throwing his super groty beard all over the place. Well, at least we all know Jennifer Aniston is definitely over him now.

Speaking of Haiti, I must thank all of you who took the time to comment on my fundraising post!! And all of you who helped spread the word on twitter and elsewhere (like Marinka, Wendi, Jessica, KazzieLB, smilinggreenmom, techsavvymama and princessmikkimo).

And MEGA thanks to my amazing corporate partners, Yogamat Boutique and Baby Star who each matched my $200 contribution. But it got even better over the weekend when I was contacted by UV Skinz, a fabulous swimshirt company, who also wanted to match the offer!! So thank you to UV Skinz. I’m not really surprised that this company would step forward to help.

The president, Rhonda Sparks, started the company after losing her 32 year-old husband to skin cancer, leaving her to raise her 3 boys. She decided her life mission would be to raise awareness about the disease. UV Skinz produces swimshirts in tons of cool designs so kids literally don’t want to take them off.  Yes, the one shown here has popsicles! Please check out their website.

So that means we raised $800 for Haiti relief!! The money will be donated to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.

As Justin sang, hallelujah!
