The Good Old Days?

I found these photos of  some babies sunbathing while researching photos from the 1950s. The infants were laid out in the sun by their nurse and I am sure flipped periodically to help them achieve that “healthy glow.” A practice like this used to be a standard child care as we saw back in these vintage ads I dug up a while back. Getting outside and being in the sun is a part of a healthy lifestyle, but this is a bit of overkill. Remember, back then there were doctor endorsed cigarettes! We know now that during the first years of life babies are particularly fragile and susceptible to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Please make sure to keep your children protected this summer, but have fun too.

“What’s A Sunburn?”

“What’s A Sunburn?” are exactly the three words we want children to know now and generations to come.  Just one childhood sunburn doubles your chance of developing melanoma in adulthood. Starting young and teaching good sun-safety habits is just as important as teaching early oral health or how to cross a street. This month, in honor of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, UV Skinz has been committed to covering up babies all over the country and the world. This May 2011 marks the 4th Annual “Save A Baby’s Skin” campaign.

Every order placed during May will receive a complimentary Special Edition baby swim shirt!

Babies under the age of 6 months should use minimal to NO sunscreen. A baby’s delicate skin could develop a rash or their pores could become clogged which could lead to over-heating.  Sunscreen should not be your first line of defense! Choose loose-fitting, uv-protective clothing that covers the whole body, a canopy for the stroller, a big sun hat and then if any tiny parts are still exposed use a mineral sunscreen of your choice.. There are two types of sunscreens so it can be up to your own discretion which one you choose. There are ones that use chemicals such as oxybenzone and the ones that use minerals such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.  EWG has a list of the ones they recommend that are mineral-based since the chemical sunscreens could be a potential “hormone disruptor.”  My favorites are Trukid and Kinesys. No matter what you choose, following those basic sun-protection tips for baby will make enjoying the outdoors that much more fun!

Wordless Wednesday

Photo_sub_4

Such a cutie! Thanks again to A Psych Mommy for letting us borrow her adorable son for Wordless Wednesday! She has spotlighted UV Skinz and brings up some good facts about where and when you can actually wear your UV Skinz–which is pretty much everywhere! Even on cloudy days, sunny days, to the park, beach, zoo, and any outdoor activity were you would be exposed to the sun for more than 2 hours. The uv protection is woven right into the fabric to give you sun protection that never washes off and that is chemical-free.

UV Skinz swim shirts are made of a nylon and spandex combination that makes the material extra smooth and soft. Babies, children and even adults love to wear them because they are just so comfortable!

A Psych Mommy is also giving her readers (and you)a chance to win a UV Skinz item of your choice during her Travel Spotlight Giveaway event. Go and check it out!

In honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, UV Skinz is promoting awareness of sun protection and skin cancer prevention by donating up to 3000 Baby Skinz swim shirts; UV Skinz will ship a free Baby Skinz swim shirt with every order placed in May.

“The intent is for customers to ‘pay it forward,’” says Rhonda Sparks. “We hope clients will donate the Baby Skinz to a charitable cause of their choice such as a women’s shelter, YMCA or even a neighbor in need. We want to get as many children covered as we can and with each donation, we hope to raise the level of awareness that much more.” Each May shipment will contain a free UV Baby Skinz along with a flyer encouraging customers to pass along the Baby Skinz to a chosen cause. UV Skinz was able to give away about 1,850 swim shirts for the May 2008 Skin Cancer Awareness promotion. The company’s goal this year is to nearly double that as supplies allow.

Babies under age six months should not be in the sun at all. Most pediatricians recommend no direct sunlight exposure for infants within the first few years. However, most infants older than six months regularly spend some time outdoors, even if just for walks in a stroller, and should be sun protected from head to toe. Protecting babies’ skin, regardless of the season, is essential to good skin health and safe sun exposure into adulthood.

The National Cancer Institute reports that many common cancer rates are falling, but melanoma rates within the U.S. continue to grow at an alarming rate. Sparks implores parents to cover their children to prevent them from becoming the one in five Americans who will develop skin cancer. “I am doing all that I can to protect my children from suffering the same fate their Father suffered when we lost him to melanoma. I hope our Baby Skinz donation program will prevent more families from being impacted by this devastating disease.”

An important part of skin cancer prevention is creating awareness. Creating awareness is all about saving our children’s lives in the future. Over 90% of skin cancers are preventable with the right education and awareness.
