FREE UV Key Chain!

10 years ago today Rhonda Sparks’ life changed forever. Her first love and husband, Darren,  passed away from Stage 4 Melanoma.  Rhonda was left to care for their three young boys and decided to begin a new journey by founding UV Skinz. Her hopes were that by creating affordable and stylish uv-protective clothing for the whole family no one would have to endure the same loss. Now UV Skinz not only reaches from coast to coast, but worldwide. UV Skinz is committed to raising awareness about sun safety and melanoma prevention.

“I cannot think of a better way to honor my late husband than by educating people about the sun and by protecting tens of thousands of people each year  with our UV Skinz products.” ~Rhonda

UV Skinz Down Under!

Memorial Day weekend Marcia Cross and her family were seen soaking-up the California sun by magazines in the U.S. Now check out Marcia Cross and daughter Savannah spotted in Australia’s Who Magazine! Savannah is skipping away in our retro Makena and green boy-cut shorts. Marcia Cross doesn’t deny her passion for skin cancer awareness, since two of her relatives have been diagnosed and survived Melanoma. She is  mom that knows just how important it is to choose the right sun protection for her family. Uv-protective clothing is the best worry-free way to protect our skin from uv damage and possible skin cancer, especially for children.  Her twin girls have been wearing UV Skinz almost half their lives and will grow up learning how to enjoy the sun while still practicing great sun-protection habits.

Way to go Marcia!

Don’t FRY Day!

Today is “Don’t Fry Day!” The Friday before Memorial Day is coined “Don’t Fry Day” in hopes that people will take the extra precautions to practice safe sun protection habits. It’s the weekend when many of us will be hitting the beaches, having picnics at the park and just enjoying the outdoors and long holiday weekend. Keep you and your family safe and let the world know you are by taking the “Don’t Fry Day” Pledge!

Here are some great sun protection tips from the Skin Cancer Prevention website:

Do Not Burn.

  • Avoid intentional tanning.
  • Avoid tanning beds.

Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds causes skin cancer and wrinkling.  If you want to look like you’ve been in the sun, consider using a sunless self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it.

Generously Apply Sunscreen to all exposed skin using a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 that provides broad-spectrum protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays.  Re-apply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.

Wear Sun Protective Clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, where possible.

Seek Shade when appropriate, remembering that the sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Use Extra Caution Near Water, Snow, and Sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun which can increase your chance of sunburn.

Get Vitamin D Safely through a healthy diet that includes vitamin supplements.  Don’t seek the sun.

“Don’t Fry Day” also marks the end of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. You still have until May 31st to place your UV Skinz order to receive a complimentary Special Edition “What’s a Sunburn”  baby skinz swim shirt! Go to the UV Skinz Facebook fan page and share what special child or organization you gifted your baby skinz to!

Top Five Cancer Fighting Foods!

Basic sun-safety is an important part of skin protection, but we also have to consider what we are putting into our bodies. Fresh, colorful and organic foods that can help our body boost its natural defensives against invasive and tricky cancer are best. The Today Show provided a list that I want to share with you. All of these foods are probably already in your diet and if they aren’t then they can be easily added.

1. Garlic

Garlic lowers the level of nitrates found in urine. Processed meats and hotdogs have very high levels of nitrates. These nitrates can morph into nitrites and can become cancer cells. Add garlic to pasta sauces or make home-made garlic bread using fresh cloves!

2. Broccoli

Raw or barely steamed broccoli contains the highest levels of sulfates which target cancer stem cells. Steam broccoli with a couple of lemon slices for a fresh flavor!

3. Berries

Fresh berries, especially black berries have phytochemicals that prevent the formation of new blood vessels called angiogenesis. A study using rats found that black raspberry extract prohibited the growth of esophageal cancer tumors. You can top your favorite yogurt and granola with fresh berries or add berries to a smoothie.

4. Tomatoes

The lycopene which gives tomatoes and other fruits and veggies their color are antioxidants that delay the growth of cancer cells in endometrial and prostate cancer. Cooking tomatoes actually brings out the lycopenes so don’t be afraid to add whole fresh tomatoes to pasta sauces or burrito fillings.

5. Black and Navy Beans

Beans are definitely good for your heart, but they are also amazing cancer fighters too! Beans contain short chain fatty acids called butyrates. These acids are formed in the intestine during digestion and high levels of these acids have been proven to be effective agaisnt cancer cells. Add beans to salads and even brownies!
