Road Trip Approved!
UV Skinz swim shirts are so versatile that even though the name implies “swimming”, they can be worn any day–all day!
See UV Skinz featured on Canada AM! (Video segment starts at 1:56)
Here are some reasons why UV Skinz is the best choice in UV protected clothing!
- Cost effective — A garment costs about the same as one or two bottles of sunscreen, but lasts much longer
- On average, a more effective UV blocker — Less prone to “missed spots” or “under application”
- Dependable — Doesn’t wash off, rub off, dissipate, penetrate, or expire
- Not messy — Spillproof
- Not an irritant — Doesn’t cause eye irritation or acne
- Quicker to apply — Covers large areas in a hurry

Genes That Cause Melanoma Discovered!
Scientist from the “Queensland Institute of Medical Research have found two new genes that together double a persons risk of melanoma.”
A study team studied the genes of 6,000 people and found that “specific changes in two genes were found to make people more susceptible to developing moles. The researchers went on to show, in another 4,000 people, the same two genes increased the risk of developing melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer.”
It has been known that the more moles a person has increases their chance of melanoma, but now they ” have conclusive genetic evidence that having a large number of moles increases an individual’s risk of developing melanoma.”
One of the reasons Rhonda, Founder of UV Skinz, created this company with the mission to “get kids covered” was because her husband passed away at a young age from Melanoma. She has the constant thought that her sons are more at risk of developing the disease. It is important to know your family history and if you have cases of skin cancer in your family then take extra precautions to protect against Melanoma.
Here is some good advice!: Moles are normal but people should seek advice from their doctor if they observe any changes in size, colour or shape. People with lots of moles are at a higher risk of developing melanoma and should therefore take extra care to avoid overexposure to ultraviolet radiation.
Did you know?: Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world with more than 10,000 new cases and 1000 people dying from the disease every year. Queensland has the highest incidence of any state with seven Queenslanders diagnosed with melanoma every day. More than one in 20 Queenslanders is expected to develop melanoma during their lifetime.

Vitamin D: From the sun or food?
“The American Academy of Dermatology recently issued an updated position statement on vitamin D after an updated review of the increasing body of scientific literature on this vitamin and its importance for optimal health.”
This is such a tricky subject because while we want to make sure we and our children are receiving the healthy amount of vitamins and nutrients, we also don’t want to expose them to UV rays unprotected just to get the right amount of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is important in many ways. Vitamin D helps maintain bone density, healthy bone growth and helps maintain the normal functioning of the nervous system. It is crucially important in aiding the body’s absorption of calcium. It has also been found that having a higher intake of vitamin D can help lower certain cancer risks, such as breast, prostate and colorectal cancer.
(Read more: http://vitamins-minerals.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_importance_of_vitamin_d#ixzz0O08ep3RO)
Now the Academy is recommending that the public received their vitamin D from nutritional sources and dietary supplements, and not from unprotected sun exposure.
“The Academy’s position statement on vitamin D now also states that individuals who regularly and properly practice sun protection, such as the daily use of sunscreen on exposed skin or the wearing of sun protective clothing, may be at risk for vitamin D insufficiency. A higher dose of vitamin D may be necessary for these individuals and others with known risk factors for vitamin D insufficiency, such as those with dark skin, the elderly, photosensitive individuals, people with limited sun exposure, obese individuals or those with fat malabsorption.
Take a look at this website to see a list of Vitamin D fortified foods, such as, salman, cheese, eggs, etc. Also at Cooking Light you can find yummy recipes that include Vitamin D!
Therefore, the Academy encourages those with concerns about their levels of vitamin D to discuss options for obtaining sufficient dietary or supplementary sources of vitamin D with their physician. “The vitamin D position statement supports the Academy’s long-held conviction on safe ways to get this important vitamin – through a healthy diet which incorporates foods naturally rich in vitamin D, vitamin D-fortified foods and beverages, and vitamin D supplements,” stated dermatologist David M. Pariser, MD, FAAD, president of the American Academy of Dermatology. “The updated recommendation for individuals who practice daily sun protection acknowledges that while protecting the skin from the damaging rays of the sun is important, so is maintaining adequate vitamin D levels.”

UV Skinz swim shirts are perfect for the whole family to wear while swimming. One big reason that I love to wear my swim shirt is because it allows me to play and feel less self-conscious about my post-baby body. Even though I’m thin I still have issues with my stomach. In my wild child days I got a belly-ring and after having two babies stretch my belly to the size of a basketball (or maybe bigger) I feel like my tummy just doesn’t look the same. Luckily, my swim shirt has a really cute design (I have the Sarah Long-Sleeve in Black/White Aloha) and it covers my stomach. So, it’s perfect!
Also, the silky-smooth feel and tight-weave of the fabric make it very quick-drying. You don’t have to worry about catching a chill once you get out of the water because the swim shirt dries so fast! Children usually don’t mind (I know mine don’t!), but I really don’t like to be cold after getting out of the water.
My girl’s and I have worn our UV Skinz while playing slip-n-slide and I found that even after getting soaked multiple times, during the intervals I was out of the water I didn’t feel cold. It actually felt really good to get wet and then be kept slightly warm and then be able to dry in the sunshine, having full confidence that we were uv-protected. The swim shirts are just so comfortable; I left Journey and Faith outside to play and splash around while I fixed lunch and I still had my swim shirt and bottoms on. Even in my air-conditioned house–I wasn’t cold! Ok–I guess you got the point already…
UV Skinz + Pool and water fun = Comfortable, dry, and UV-protected YOU!

Photostory Friday…Our Wonderful Day at the Park!
This is my first Photostory Friday…I thought that I would share some pictures of the girl’s in their new “skinz” and our Wonderful Day at the Park! Yesterday was a gorgeous day and the weather seemed just perfect for a day at the park. Just behind our house there is a great bike path that leads all the way to what we like to call “the duck park.” Since the sun was shining and there was a light breeze in the air, I decided that I would roller blade them down to the park. That is how our Wonderful Day begun!
Getting ready was easy–I dressed the girl’s in their uv swim sets; Journey wore the purple Popsicle swim shirt with matching purple board shorts and Faith wore her pink butterfly print swim shirt. Since she is so fair-skinned and prone to scrapping her knees I didn’t have her wear her shorts to the park. Instead she wore pink linen pants to keep her cool and her legs safe! Even though they were wearing the best sun protection around (*wink) I didn’t forget to apply sunscreen to their faces, ears, neck, arms and legs.
Once at the park, Faith claimed a spot in the sand to dig for treasures while I pushed Journey on the swings.

Even Faith decided that she would take a chance on the “big girl swings.” Faith always wants to swing with me, but somehow she got the courage to swing all by herself for the first time!

She was so proud of herself and I was just as proud!
At one point we had to take a potty break and Journey was pretending to talk to Princess Aurora and Cinderella on her imaginary cell phone. The conversation lasted a good five minutes (to and from the bathroom) and I even had to chat with the Princesses too. Well, Journey kept telling them that she was having a wonderful day at the park! It was too cute and very sweet (and a little weird that my 3-year-old was really talking to Disney Princesses). We were having a such a wonderful day at the park, so while Journey and Faith ran off to climb the jungle gym together I headed over to the ice cream truck to get them a special treat for the stroller-roller-blade-ride home.
As I was returning with their sundae cups I saw a situation brewing atop of the double slide. As I walked closer I saw two big boys sitting at the top of the slide and Journey and Faith waiting their turn. Then I saw Journey’s face a little scowled and heard her say, “Don’t do that to my sister!” When I came close enough I asked if everything was alright and the boys just stared at me. In my nicest I’m-not-your-mommy-but-you-should-listen-to-me-anyway-voice I asked them to go down the slide so that Journey and Faith could have a turn. They complied and then my girl’s had their turn.
Once we were all ready to leave the park I asked Journey what happened at the top of the slide. She told me that one of the boys had called Faith a chicken! And Journey stood up for her little sister by saying, “Don’t do that to my sister!” I was so proud of her and told her that she did a good thing by sticking up for Faith.
We did have a great day at the park. What I am most happy about is that Journey is growing into such a great little girl. She always knows how to make me smile, she is so sweet and caring. I love that she felt she was having a Wonderful Day, but the best part of the day was after the park and all the laughter when both Journey and Faith took a very long nap and left me with perfect quietness!
